Tiny Art Supplies — Pencils, Crayons and More

Make adorable miniature pencils, crayons, sketchpads, and more from toothpicks and scraps. Perfect for a mouse classroom, studio, or creative corner.

Every mouse artist needs supplies, and making miniature pencils, crayons, and sketchpads is a delightful little project. These tiny art supplies look absolutely adorable arranged on a desk or in a classroom, and they are so quick to make that you can create a whole set in one sitting.

Step by Step

Step 1 — Cut Toothpicks to Pencil Length

Snip a toothpick into short pieces — each one becomes a tiny pencil or crayon. Sand or trim the pointed end to look like a sharpened pencil tip. For crayons, cut the toothpick a bit shorter and round off both ends so they have that chunky crayon shape.

Step 2 — Paint the Colours

Paint each piece in a different colour. For pencils, paint the body one colour and the very tip in black or grey to look like graphite. For crayons, use bold primary colours. You can even add a tiny band of a different colour near the top to suggest the metal ferrule of a pencil.

Step 3 — Create a Tiny Paper Pad

Cut several very small rectangles of paper and stack them together. Glue them along one edge to create a tiny notepad or sketchbook. You can draw a few tiny scribbles or doodles on the top page to make it look like it has been used. A small piece of cardboard on the back gives it structure.

Step 4 — Make a Crayon Box

Fold a tiny piece of paper or cardboard into a small open box shape. Line up your finished crayons inside — they should fit snugly. You can decorate the outside of the box with a tiny label or colourful design. A little cup made from paper also works nicely as a pencil holder.
