Make a Mouse Door — A Magical Entrance

Create a magical mouse door that looks like a tiny entrance to another world. Perfect for a wall, baseboard, or tree trunk.

Imagine a tiny door at the base of your wall, your baseboard, or tucked against a tree trunk — a little entrance to another world where mice live their secret lives. In this project, Karina shows you how to make a magical mouse door that sparks the imagination. It's a wonderful craft to make with children, and the result is pure enchantment.

Step by Step

Step 1 — Cut the Door Shape

Start by cutting your door shape from wood or cardboard. A classic rounded top gives it that fairy tale look, but a simple rectangle works beautifully too. Make it about 10 to 12 centimetres tall — just the right size for a mouse.

Step 2 — Create the Frame

Cut thin strips of cardboard or wood to frame the door. Glue them around the edges to create the look of a proper door frame. You can add a little arch across the top for extra charm.

Step 3 — Add the Handle and Hinges

Glue a small bead or button onto the door as a handle. Attach paper or fabric hinges to one side — they don't need to work, but they should look the part. A tiny keyhole cut from paper is a lovely finishing touch.

Step 4 — Paint and Age

Paint the door in a colour that suits its new home. Once dry, you can add wood grain lines with a fine brush and lightly sand the edges to make it look old and well-used. A little brown wash gives it a beautifully weathered appearance.

Step 5 — Install and Decorate

Fix your door to the wall, baseboard, or wherever you'd like it to live. Add tiny decorations around it — a welcome mat made from fabric, a small potted plant, or a little lantern. The more details you add, the more magical it becomes.
