Tiny Desks from Matchboxes

Transform empty matchboxes into charming miniature desks with real working drawers. A clever recycled craft that is easier than you think!

Matchboxes are one of the best-kept secrets in miniature making. They slide open and closed, which means you can create tiny furniture with real working drawers. This little desk is a perfect example — it looks like a proper piece of furniture, and those drawers actually open. How fun is that?

Step by Step

Step 1: Stack Matchboxes for the Drawers

Take two or three empty matchboxes and stack them on top of each other. Glue the outer sleeves together so they form a solid column. This stack becomes the drawer unit of your desk — each inner tray slides in and out like a real drawer.

Step 2: Create the Desktop Surface

Cut a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the matchbox stack to serve as the desktop. It should overhang just a little on the front and sides to look like a proper desk surface. Glue it on top of the matchbox stack and press it flat while it dries.

Step 3: Attach the Legs

Cut four legs from cardboard or popsicle sticks and glue them to the underside of the desktop. If you have the drawers on one side, you might only need two legs on the opposite side — the matchbox stack itself acts as the other support. Play around with the placement until it feels balanced.

Step 4: Add Drawer Pulls

Glue a tiny bead to the front of each matchbox tray to serve as a drawer knob. This small detail makes such a big difference — suddenly the desk looks like a real piece of furniture. Make sure the beads are centered and let the glue dry completely so they do not pop off when you open the drawers.

Step 5: Decorate

Cover the outside of the desk with paper or paint to hide the matchbox graphics and give it a finished look. You can wrap it in colored paper, paint it a solid color, or even use patterned scrapbook paper for something more decorative. Add a tiny lamp or stack of papers on top to complete the scene.
