Every Mouse Mansion starts with a single cardboard box. That's really all it takes — one box, a few simple tools, and a willingness to just begin. Don't worry about making it perfect. The most charming miniature houses are the ones that look like someone actually lived in them.
This tutorial walks you through the very first steps: choosing your box, planning your rooms, and turning a flat piece of cardboard into the start of something wonderful. You've got this.
Step by Step
Step 1: Choose Your Box
Look for a sturdy cardboard box — a shoebox, a shipping box, or even an old cereal box if you're starting small. The thicker the cardboard, the sturdier your mansion will be. Don't worry about size too much. Even a tiny box can become a cosy little room.
Step 2: Plan Your Rooms
Before you start cutting, take a moment to sketch out your idea. How many rooms do you want? Where will the doors go? A quick pencil drawing on the cardboard itself works perfectly. It doesn't need to be an architectural blueprint — just a rough plan so you know where you're headed.
Step 3: Cut the Openings
Using your ruler and pencil, mark where you want doorways, windows, or openings between rooms. Then carefully cut them out. If you're using a craft knife, always cut on a safe surface and ask an adult for help if you need it. The openings don't have to be perfectly straight — real houses aren't always perfectly straight either.
Step 4: Reinforce the Structure
If your box feels a bit wobbly, glue an extra layer of cardboard to the walls or floor. You can also fold small strips of cardboard into L-shapes and glue them into corners for extra support. Think of these as the hidden bones of your house — nobody will see them, but they make everything stronger.
Step 5: Give It a First Coat of Paint
A thin layer of white or light-coloured paint over the cardboard gives you a clean surface to work with later. It also hides any printed text or logos on the box. Let it dry completely before you move on to decorating. This step is optional, but it makes everything that comes after look so much better.
